Read Matthew 15:29-39 & Mark 7:31-8:10

Jesus may have been refreshed by pulling away from the busyness of His ministry, and encouraged by the faith of the Syrophoenician woman, but He wasn’t quite ready to head back to Israel just yet. Jesus had another stop to make first. When they realized where He was headed, His disciples probably wished they were going back to Israel, but God had plans for His Son to bring light to a very dark place.

The Work of God

Then they said to Him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” John 6:28 ESV1

Read Matthew 14:22-36, Mark 6:45-56 & John 6:16-29

Jesus always had compassion on the masses, He always rejected the self-sufficient, and He always expected much of His disciples. These facts are illustrated in this familiar account. Here Jesus encountered humble people who needed His help, selfish people who wanted to use Him for their own gain, and earnest people who were ready to accept valuable teaching on what pleases God.

Rest Assured

Immediately He made the disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He dismissed the crowds. And after He had dismissed the crowds, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. When evening came, He was there alone. Matthew 14:23-23 ESV1

Read Matthew 14:13-23, Mark 6:30-46, Luke 9:10-17 & John 6:1-15

This widespread healing, accompanied by an amazing miracle, is familiar to many. It is found in all four Gospels. In your Bible, you will find it under a heading to the effect of, Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand. This event is so familiar to us that we might have a tendency to quickly gloss over it. But if we do, we will miss something very important. There is more going on here than the feeding of a massive crowd.

I Can’t. He Can

Have ever heard the call of Jesus but realized you just didn’t have what it took to do what He asked? Have you ever felt overwhelmed by a need but didn’t see how you could possibly help?
